Claire looked confused, and Alia gazed thoughtfully down at the baby.
"What if you found out something," she said. "What if you found out you weren't a very nice person. If you'd done things, evil things, in the past and that once you got your memory back you'd go back to doing it. It could happen to any of us. Most of us don't know who we used to be. Maybe we should take this as a fresh start."
The multicoloured doorway reappeared behind Claire, and Zoey re-emerged. Aaron looked straight at her, and she walked closer to him, putting her hand right through Claire's face to waggle her fingers at him.
"Little brat," she said. "Having a heart-to-heart with the single mother are we?"
Alia ignored her.
"Whoever I was," she continued, "this is a fresh start. We don't have to go back to who we were if we don't want to."
"Oh yes you do," Zoey said. "There'll be no more talk of this, Alia. Oh, if you could remember what has been done to you - done to us - in the past. Well. In the future, from this point of reference. And I'd be careful if I were you. Claire here might think your little speech about past evils is prophetic once she finds out who your host is."
