Ami and Scott arrived at the cookfire to find Daniel, Locke, Daisy, Claire, the marshal, and a few others examining the stainless steel sink and other stuff scavenged from the fuselage. Before long Scott caught Daniel's eye. "Question for you," he said vaguely, nodding away from the group.

Daniel looked up with more than passing and casual interest as Ami and Scott joined the group gathered around the cookfire. Ami was one of the few names left on the list of people he hadn't interviewed, mostly because he'd been unwilling to disturb the sleeping couple after last night's adventures and then he hadn't been able to find her.

He was ready to ask her the question that he'd already posed to the others, when Scott indicated that he wished to speak to Daniel alone. With a nod to indicate that he understood, Daniel excused himself from the group discussing the stainless steel sink and stepped away from the throng, assuming that Scott would follow.

He got more than he bargained for. Scott came, with Ami in tow, which made Daniel think that maybe he might just get to ask her the pressing question after all. As soon as he discovered what it was that Scott wanted to talk about. It had to be important, because as near as Daniel could tell, Scott definitely didn't seem to be the type to seek anyone out - anyone other than Ami that was.

(And he doesn't particularly care for my Air Force association either.)

"Something tells me that you're not about to ask me an easy one, like the meaning of life or why are we here, are you?" Daniel asked with a wry grin.

"We already know that," Ami answered without missing a beat, "It's 42."

Daniel stared at her in confusion, dismissing the idea that it was British humor when Scott gave a soft chuckle. Yet another pop culture reference that went clear over Daniel's head, but he was used to it. "All right then, what can I do for you?"

If there was one thing that Daniel did not need to hear, this was it. He knew, rationally, that in a group this diverse, there would be some interesting characters, but he'd hoped that they were all harmless interesting and not needs to be restrained interesting. His first response to Scott's comment was to remove his glasses, pinch the bridge of his nose and swear softly in Sumerian and Abydosian. That done, he fixed his gaze on Ami, more than a little concerned about her in the wake of this new bit of information.

"Did he try anything?" Stupid question, Daniel realized as soon as it left his mouth. Somehow, he doubted that Scott would be standing there having a calm, concerned informative conversation if Ethan had tried something with Scott's girlfriend. He hurried on, "What exactly did he say or do that scared you?"

Ami hesitated, and licked her lips, her gaze almost, but not quite darting to Scott before she spoke. "He didn't, not exactly," Ami said. She drew up into herself, folding her arms across her chest in a protective stance, "It was just that you sometimes get a feeling about people? Haven't you ever just had a gut instinct about someone or something Daniel, that is spot on?"

Years ago, his knee jerk reaction would have been to dismiss it as panic in the face of last night's attack, however, he'd seen too much both on and off of the island - especially off of the island - to discount intuition so easily. Plenty of people had it, and whether it was Jack's, Sam's, Teal'c's or Daniel's, it had saved SG-1's collective asses a number of times over. Maybe Ami was one of the ones who learned to listen to hers.

Daniel turned back to Scott, "Did he give you any indication of what his motivations or intentions might have been?"

Ami sensed Scott's unease and the concern he felt for her. She edged closer to him, taking his hand and lacing her fingers through his. /Scott, I've been to hell and back, you don't know. Talking about Ethan isn't going to upset me./

She felt a pulse of disbelief and added, /All right, it isn't going to upset me much./

Daniel didn't need to be psychic to see how clearly uncomfortable Scott was talking about this with Ami nearby, but he didn't see any polite way that he could ask her to leave. That would be Scott's call – although Daniel had to admit that he and Scott could probably talk more freely if the woman wasn't hovering around.

He gave a quick glance at the people gathered around the cook fire, under pretense of simply keeping an eye on things and making certain that no one had crept up on them, all the while hoping to catch the eye of someone whom he might be able to subtly communicate to the need to move Ami away from the conversation. However, he had no such luck and after a quick glance up and down the beach for good measure, he returned his full attention to Scott.

"Logical behavior doesn't always figure into the equation where these sorts of personalities are concerned," Daniel pointed out to Scott. "There's nothing saying that you weren't right to worry about that."

Out of the corner of his eye, Daniel saw Ami flinch just a bit. It was a slight enough movement that if he hadn't been keeping a surreptitious watch on her, he might not have noticed it, but enough to tell him that she was very disturbed by the idea.

(After last night, there's no question as to why.)

Scott's comment was a good enough lead in to the question that Daniel wanted to ask at any rate. He looked at Ami, keeping his voice level and calm, "Did they come after you last night, Ami?"

The slight widening of her eyes and stiffening of her shoulders answered the question before she nodded. She surprised him by asking, "Why?"

"I'm trying to assess the camp, figure who they attacked, maybe figure out why," Daniel explained. That was part of the truth at least. He turned back to the subject to the subject of Ethan, addressing Scott again and giving Ami time to calm herself from the apparent tension his question raised in her. "How dangerous do you think he is? Or did you get any indication of that?"

Daniel nodded in agreement to Scott's assessment. It's what he would have suggested, but he wanted to get the other man's psychic opinion on the matter.

(And if anyone had ever told me even a week ago that I would be seeking a psychic opinion, I would have at least given them a funny look,) Daniel thought.

For a brief moment, Daniel considered telling Scott about the list. Then he decided that telling the man that his girlfriend's name was on a list of unknown origin after discovering that she was the target of a stalker was probably not the wisest idea. He may have no choice later, but until he reviewed the list with a few other people, he wasn't going to share it with the general public. Even if the general public had psychics among them. (Or at least one psychic.)

"I don't want to create a panic," Daniel agreed, "And we certainly don't want to do anything that will spoke him or cause him to do something dangerous and stupid. I'll mention it to a few people, and we'll keep an eye on him." He paused and looked at Ami, "You might want to mention it to a few of your friends, as well, the ones you can trust to keep it low key and not do anything to spook him.

"In the interim, I think that given this news, we're going to have to go beyond the 'buddy system' and do more of a 'quad system' for forays into the jungle. That should at least prevent Ethan from getting anyone alone, and from disabling one person and still having an advantage over another."

Daniel racked his brain for a moment, trying to figure out if there was anyone in the camp who might be able to do recon and size Ethan up, but came up empty. Clarice wasn't up to it, and Ripley would scare the hell out of him. He couldn't think of any women he'd ask to put themselves in the possible line of danger; he'd have to poke around about that later.

"Scott, can you please let me know if you pick up anything else?"

Ami's first reaction to Scott's confession was surprise. She hadn't expected to him to come so close to admitting to the sphere's existence to Daniel. Through their link she felt a combination of anxiety, fear and hints of anger as well, all underscored with Scott's paranoia and his grip on her hand grew almost painful. She sent back as much comfort and calm as she could, focusing her attention on Scott and not on Daniel's answer. Ami didn't know how comforting she was being, particularly considering that the idea of someone there – watching them, learning about them – without them even knowing was more than a bit unsettling.

Ami pushed the thought aside and focused on Scott completely. She said and thought, putting as much comfort and calm into the words as she could, "But we know about them now. No matter what they want or what their motivations are, we know about them, right? And that means that we can be ready for them now, we can defend ourselves."

She looked pointedly at Daniel for confirmation and watched his eyes widen as though he was suddenly seeing her for the first time.

(What, does he think that I'm a meek little mouse that hides behind my boyfriend?)

"We sent them running last night," Daniel agreed. "I don't think they were expecting us to put up that much of fight, which is a good thing. And you're right, we can fortify and prepare for them, although it's doubtful that they'll come that way at us again.

"To be honest, this puts things in a new light, and it's not a good one. I haven't had the opportunity to question the prisoners yet, but I think that it's time that happened. Hopefully, they'll give us some information that we need, or explain their motivations."

"But you don't think they will?" Ami asked quietly.

"Let's just say that I've dealt with the type of mindset these people seem to project in the past and I'm not particularly hopeful," Daniel said. He looked at Scott, then back to Ami and she felt his surprise and confusion give way to simple acceptance. She spared an idle moment to wonder what was going on in Daniel's head and then decided that she didn't care. "There's a lot going on and a lot to be figured out. Let me talk to our prisoners and see what I can find out."

"If there was a mole in the camp, they're probably long gone," Ami said.

"You're probably right, but I'd rather remain optimistic."

"Hiding in plain sight?"

Daniel blinked at her and Ami could see him reassessing her and reclassifying her in his head. "Quite possibly." Raking his hand through his hair, Daniel fixed both of them with a steady gaze, "It was a rough night, for everyone. Thank you for telling me that Scott, and for the information about Ethan, but I'm going to give you two a piece of advice that I've been giving a lot of people. Take a few moments and just rest a bit, let yourselves recover.

"I promise I'll keep you abreast of anything that I find out," Daniel said. "But right now, take some downtime, you two."

Ami squeezed Scott's hand, continuing to send empathic waves of comfort and relaxation. "We plan on it."

Daniel considered the couple for another moment, and then decided to give them some space. Something about their conversation had put Scott on edge, and Daniel assumed it had something to do with whatever it was that Scott said helped him focus. Either it was that important to the man, or there was more to it than what Scott said; whatever the case Daniel wasn't going to pry right now.

With a polite "Thank you," and a nod, he headed back to the cook fire where he was met by more than a few curious gazes. Well practiced in ignoring questions that he didn't want to answer, Daniel pretended not to notice the glances and in that way wasn't forced to offer any lies or half-explanations.

"Has anyone figured out how to make this into a stewpot, yet?" Daniel asked.

"Still working on it," John said.

"Well, while we have a few more heads than we probably need pondering out the problem, why don't we talk about those boar pits, John? We can grab Blaise and get you a quick check up from Dr. Pierson." The last was added to appease Daisy who seemed ready to say something about Daniel dragging John away when he was supposed to be resting.

Pierson had already told John to take it easy, and Daniel didn't plan on keeping the man on his feet for very long. However, John was one of the few in the camp with survival skill and a good head on his shoulders. In the absence of Jon and Ripley, it was time to share The List with John, one of the people Daniel added to the list of reliable and trustworthy and knowledgeable.

He met John's eyes and hoped that he communicated that he wanted to talk about more than hunting boar.

"What isn't it?" Daniel asked with a shake of his head and a sardonic laugh. "This island just keeps getting interesting."

He looked back and decided to put a little bit more distance between them and the cook fire before sitting down. John had taken a hit to the head and Daniel wasn't stupid. The man did need to take it easy for a few days.

Daniel considered how to tell John about Ethan without betraying Scott's secret and then decided that he would just decline to offer details. John seemed to be a reasonable enough man to accept that. "Scott and Ami were alerting me to a possible problem in the form of Ethan. The man is demonstrating stalker behavior."

"No," Daniel shook his head, "He hasn't. I can't exactly reveal how they came about the information, but I do believe it. Ethan's outward behavior is not a projection of whom he really is. His attitude towards Ami was apparently a bit 'possessive' in nature.

"Wisely, they were concerned that he might have focused the same attention on others in the camp. I'd like to keep an eye on him, but without sounding a general alarm that could make him suspcious or cause him to do something rash."

Daniel nodded to John's suggestion. "Let's keep the option of Daisy calling his bluff in reserve for the moment. This camp is tense and stressed enough with the Marshal hounding Kate, and the general tension from recent events, I'd rather not add Ethan to the list. If we can keep an eye on him, keep him calm and unawares for the time, I think that would be a good thing.

"Having more eyes on him will be a help as well, I think, so getting Daisy, George and Emerson to help in that fashion would be good."

Daniel thought about The List in his pocket, and after weighing the pros and cons, decided to share it with John. "John, there's something else. Walt found a list on the beach. I'm not making this general knowledge yet because I don't want to incite a panic, but I do want the people who've been keeping watch and likely will continue to, as well as those who might be called upon to go hunting or to defend hunting and foraging groups to be aware of it.

"I don't know what it means, but I have a sinking suspicion that it's a shopping list."

John stared at him, "A shopping list?"

Daniel reached into his pocket and retrieved the list, handing it to John. "An extremely morbid and worrisome shopping list."

"At a guess, I can't figure it out. I don't see any true similarity between the four. I would assume that asteriks were meant to make them stand out, so maybe they were the most important targets. I couldn't hazard a guess as to why.

"I would say that they're kids, and Claire is a pretty young and inexperienced woman for all intents and purposes, but Ami's inclusion wipes that theory out. So, no, I don't know what the asteriks mean. I'm hoping that someone will be able to puzzle it out."

(Someone like Clarice when she's back to holding herself together. This sort of thing is right up her alley and in her job description.)

Daniel accepted the list and gave it another read. He blinked when he read the hastily scribbled note at the end - it made sense now in connection with what Scott had said. It probably would have made sense when he spoke to Scott earlier had he truly processed it.

(He said he had technology to heal, maybe that's what it is,) Daniel mused, (Or maybe it does a whole lot more than heal.) Of course if The Others knew Scott had it, and what it did, it implied very close survelliance or a very cunning and devious mole.

(Or telepathy or mind reading of some sort.) Daniel thought back to the woman on the beach last night, the one who spoke in his head and not with her mouth.

"This is probably going to sound completely crazy, John," Daniel said as he returned the list to his pocket. "But on this island, maybe not. Last night, I could have sworn that one of Them talked to me. Telepathically. In my head." Daniel shook his head and rubbed his forehead, "Yeah, I know, the stress is getting to me too."

Daniel immediately decided that he would edit the note before showing it to anyone else. The note gave away Scott's 'technology' and partically his secret and Daniel had sworn not to do that to the man.

"Because we don't really have enough problems without telepathic Others," Daniel sighed. "And that's not something that we can defend against." He let his attention roam to the two prisoners, "I'm really going to have to interrogate them. Currently, I'm hoping that letting them stew for a while has made them more receptive to communication and an exchange of information. I'm doubting, however."

He scratched the back of his head, shaking loose sand without a care. If not for the weirdness and the fact that they were effectively stranded, he might have enjoyed the reminder of Abydos. He lowered his voice, quiet and somber, "John, that part about Scott's possession isn't meant to go beyond us. I'll have to remove that from the note before sharing it with anyone else. It was my oversight that you even saw it at all."

This would go down in Daniel's memory as the moment he decided to accept anything and everything about the island. If someone told him the Boogey Man was wandering around the jungle or there were elves playing in the trees, he was going to believe it, because really it seemed that everything was possible in this place.

"It's a guardian, but it's not protecting us," Daniel repeated more to himself than to John. "I guess we should be glad that it's also not protecting The Others. Of course then that begs the question of what it is protecting."

He didn't expect John to have any answers, and he would have been surprised if the man did. "Funny how the more pieces of the puzzle we get, the harder it gets to put it all together. I am of the opinion that this isn't all random or chance, the who and how and why of it, I don't know, but I'm seriously beginning to feel like a lab rat in a cage."

(Not like I haven't had that feeling before,) Daniel reflected thinking back to the Gamekeeper's "fun."

It took Daniel at least a full twenty seconds to process the information that Locke gave him. Then he asked quietly, "You were?"

"Paralyzed," Locke said simply.

Daniel nodded, expecting a simliar answer and his brain went into science mode, playing over a million different scenarios of how and why such a thing could be possible. In the absence of advanced technology or, what the hell, magical healing powers, a man did not step out of a wheel chair without intervention.

(And who's to say there wasn't intervention?) Daniel's thought teased him.

Although if there was any confirmation that the people on this beach were brought here for a reason or by extraordinary means, then Locke's revelation was it. The only question that Daniel had was a big fat 'why?'

But that answer probably wasn't going to be forthcoming until the camp could be rebuilt, until people felt secure, until they explored the island, until a million other overwhelming things happened.

Amazingly, he didn't think he sounded overwhelmed when he answered Locke, "Then the sooner we figure out why we're here, the sooner we'll be able to leave. But something tells me the finding out is a long way off."

Locke's statement about Clarice knowing surprised Daniel, although he didn't know why. Maybe it was another one of those things that would pave the way for Clarice to accept the truly unbelievable.

"It'll stay between us," Daniel agreed. He seemed to be collecting secrets here on the beach.

He turned to walk away, then paused and looked back at Locke. "I understand what you said about being stared at and pointedly ignored. It was nice to leave those days behind."

Movement breaking free of the jungle caught his peripheral vision, and he turned, tensing. The tension fled immediately as he spotted Jon and Ash's brightly colored shirt.

Ami watched Daniel's retreating back and then turned to Scott, more than a little concerned by the emotions coming from him. He was keyed up and tense, more than a little nervous and anxious, tying himself in virtual knots. Evidently, telling Daniel even the fraction that he did brought up that bubble of paranoia that Scott kept as a constant companion.

Stepping up to him, Ami cupped his face in her hands and forced him to look down at her. /Hey, love, you did well, all right? Daniel's known about your psychic abilities for days, and your healing abilities and he's neither done nor said a thing about it. Honestly, I still don't know what to make of him, but I think he's more concerned about the camp as a whole right now than he is about you or your abilities – or your sphere./

Letting Scott rail and vent was good for him, rather than him holding it all inside, so Ami listened and let him release it all. However, once they reached the shelter and the wave of guilt he projected started to swell, she stopped him.

"Stop," Ami said and thought to him, placing her hands on his chest. /I've been hiding in plain sight for years, and I can help you do the same. But that comes later. We can make ourselves sick worrying about what *might* happen *later,* when we get rescued, or we can deal with the here and the now. We have plenty to deal with here and now./

She leaned up and kissed him, pouring as much sympathy and understanding and affection into the kiss that she could, and she was relieved that he at least responded and returned her kiss. Drawing back, she brushed her fingertips along his cheek, giving him a look full of fondness, affection, and tenderness. "And in the here and now, you need to go wash up."

Ami laughed with delight and surprise when Scott scooped her up in his arms. For some reason, that one gesture made her feel surprisingly delicate and feminine. However, her laughter quickly turned to protest when she realized he intended to plunge right into the water.

"Wait!" Ami giggled, "In my experience, dry clothes are far easier to remove than wet ones."

"So?" Scott asked and that was all the further warning she got before he jumped into the water. While it was not deep enough to go diving, it was plenty deep enough to create an upward splash wave that drenched them both.

Ami squealed with glee, and then taking advantage of her position in his arms, grabbed him around the back of the head and kissed him quite soundly. She would have kissed him far longer, but she was reminded of their reason for being here - well, one reason for being here and she pulled back, tugging teasingly and playfully on his shirt collar. "Put me down and get rid of this. You stink of fish."

"How do I know that you're not just trying to undress me," Scott mock protested as he slowly, very slowly set her on her feet, allowing her to slide down his body.

Ami hooked her hands under the hem of his shirt and yanked it over his head. /You don't./

The thing that amazed Ami time and time again about being with Scott was how free she was when she was with him. She was free to be herself, no pretending, no walls, no shields, no boundaries. He knew who she was and what she was and Scott was fine with that, amazed and intrigued by it even. There was an intoxicating lightness to that type of freedom, a blissful feeling that transcended the ability to be put into words.

When she was with Scott the whole world faded away and disappeared and there was nothing left but the two of them, the center of their very own universe. Ami knew that there had never been a time in her life or a person in her life that made her feel this way, that gave her this sense of perfect completeness and it made her believe that there was some truth to the adage which professed that everyone had a soul mate. Maybe it was foolish romanticism, but she truly believed that Scott was hers.

Making love wasn't only about physical gratification, but there was a deeper joining there, a mental connection that two people could not have made if they were not telepathic. They knew each other more fully than either of them probably could comprehend, and Ami gave herself to him, and to the connection between them, completely.

[Ami] Back to the Real World (tag Scott)

Ami lost track of the time, being completely wrapped up in and distracted by Scott. The pleasurable feedback loop between them was in full action, spurring them forward time and time again. Ami found delight in so many little things, from the contrast between Scott's warm hands gliding over her skin and the cool water lapping around them, to the always amazing and arousing contrast of dark skin against light.

Twice they tried to wrap things up and head back to camp, only to once find distraction in the simple task of Ami washing her hair, and the second time in the pursuit of washing one another. Eventually though, they realized that they could not escape the real world forever and sated and happy, they focused on actually washing up to return to camp.

Ami sat on the bank in her knickers and bra and worked her hair into a plait down the back of her head while watching Scott carefully shave off the goatee. When he was done, Ami pronounced the results to be quite spectacular and offered compliments in the form of a kiss that came dangerously close to prompting another round had it not been for a much more practical matter rearing its head - namely the growling of both of their stomachs.

The couple dressed and gathering up their belongings, prepared to head back to the real world.
