Ami and Scott arrived at the cookfire to find Daniel, Locke, Daisy, Claire, the marshal, and a few others examining the stainless steel sink and other stuff scavenged from the fuselage. Before long Scott caught Daniel's eye. "Question for you," he said vaguely, nodding away from the group.

Daniel considered how to tell John about Ethan without betraying Scott's secret and then decided that he would just decline to offer details. John seemed to be a reasonable enough man to accept that. "Scott and Ami were alerting me to a possible problem in the form of Ethan. The man is demonstrating stalker behavior."

Date: 2006-03-22 05:57 pm (UTC)Daniel's statement about not revealing the information about Ethan was telling. Perhaps he knew that Ami was telepathic. Locke hadn't forgotten Scott's sprint across the beach to Ami's side that morning. He was certain that Ami communicated telepathically with Scott. The young man might be able to communicate with her as well. Locke wished that Ami and Damon were willing to be more open about their abilities. Silent, long-range communication was an invaluable tatical advantage. Nevertheless, he'd keep their confidence unless there was no other option. The survival of the camp outweighed their secrets in the end.
"I'll help keep an eye on him," Locke replied. "Emerson, Daisy, and George would probably be willing to help as well. They'd be able to observe without alarming Ethan or anyone else." An idea came to Locke. He thought through it before voicing it to Daniel. "Daisy might be able to call Ethan's bluff. She's an actress, and can handle herself in tense situations. We'd have to monitor the situation covertly, of course. Shall I make the suggestion?"

Daniel thought about The List in his pocket, and after weighing the pros and cons, decided to share it with John. "John, there's something else. Walt found a list on the beach. I'm not making this general knowledge yet because I don't want to incite a panic, but I do want the people who've been keeping watch and likely will continue to, as well as those who might be called upon to go hunting or to defend hunting and foraging groups to be aware of it.
"I don't know what it means, but I have a sinking suspicion that it's a shopping list."
John stared at him, "A shopping list?"
Daniel reached into his pocket and retrieved the list, handing it to John. "An extremely morbid and worrisome shopping list."

"This proves that they're after more than the child-bearing women and children. They've clearly either been surveilling us closely or there's a mole. Any idea what the asterisks indicate?"

Date: 2006-03-22 08:52 pm (UTC)"I would say that they're kids, and Claire is a pretty young and inexperienced woman for all intents and purposes, but Ami's inclusion wipes that theory out. So, no, I don't know what the asteriks mean. I'm hoping that someone will be able to puzzle it out."
(Someone like Clarice when she's back to holding herself together. This sort of thing is right up her alley and in her job description.)
Daniel accepted the list and gave it another read. He blinked when he read the hastily scribbled note at the end - it made sense now in connection with what Scott had said. It probably would have made sense when he spoke to Scott earlier had he truly processed it.
(He said he had technology to heal, maybe that's what it is,) Daniel mused, (Or maybe it does a whole lot more than heal.) Of course if The Others knew Scott had it, and what it did, it implied very close survelliance or a very cunning and devious mole.
(Or telepathy or mind reading of some sort.) Daniel thought back to the woman on the beach last night, the one who spoke in his head and not with her mouth.
"This is probably going to sound completely crazy, John," Daniel said as he returned the list to his pocket. "But on this island, maybe not. Last night, I could have sworn that one of Them talked to me. Telepathically. In my head." Daniel shook his head and rubbed his forehead, "Yeah, I know, the stress is getting to me too."

"I've encountered telepaths before," Locke continued. "Very rarely, but they exist. If the Others are telepathic, that may explain how they've collected so much information. Particularly the small, silver ball, which I presume is Scott's. He's the only person I can think of who fits the description. If the silver ball is, say, golf ball-sized or smaller, it would be easy to conceal."

Date: 2006-03-22 11:58 pm (UTC)"Because we don't really have enough problems without telepathic Others," Daniel sighed. "And that's not something that we can defend against." He let his attention roam to the two prisoners, "I'm really going to have to interrogate them. Currently, I'm hoping that letting them stew for a while has made them more receptive to communication and an exchange of information. I'm doubting, however."
He scratched the back of his head, shaking loose sand without a care. If not for the weirdness and the fact that they were effectively stranded, he might have enjoyed the reminder of Abydos. He lowered his voice, quiet and somber, "John, that part about Scott's possession isn't meant to go beyond us. I'll have to remove that from the note before sharing it with anyone else. It was my oversight that you even saw it at all."
