[Hugh] Much, Much Too Late

Another blood-curdling scream caught Hugh's attention. He spun in place, cursing. He was breathing hard and his heart was hammering in his chest. The camp was in an uproar now, that was for sure.

The second vampire--(How of these God-cursed things were there?)--was draining the life from Miho. This despite the fact that she'd run her katana clean through it's torso. It leaned over, keeping it's hand pressed to her chest as her knees buckling and she sank to the sank.

Hugh wasn't terribly surprised to realize that it wasn't Miho screaming. Her face was a mask of suffering, but she remained silent--as always. It was Sun and Carrie, screaming and holding one another, that he'd heard.

The vampire released it's hold on the dessicated husk that had been a lovely young woman moments earlier and turned on Sun and Carrie--just as Jin appeared from nowhere to impale it with a...spear? A fishing spear.

Jin pushed the vampire off its feet and leaned his weight on it, to hold it down, shouting over his shoulder. A moment later Tommy appeared with a second spear and after only a moment's pause to stare, he drove his spear into the vampire.

The spears seemed to do little to harm the vampire, but they kept it pinned. Hugh ran over and shot it with the blaster. It took a couple of shots before the vampire went limp. Hugh turned to shout for Sayid, but Sayid was already running to join them.

It took only a few moments for Sayid to decapitate this one. (Practice makes perfect,) Hugh thought.

"Is that all of them?" Hugh asked, even as he looked around for more. He didn't spot any. Plenty of screaming, shouting, hysterical people--but no more vampires.

Hugh sat down abruptly, his legs giving out. He rested, feeling his breathing and heartbeat settle down much too slowly for his taste--another reminder of his age. In his prime, he'd have been ready for more much more quickly.

Sayid appeared in front of him like magic. Hugh frowned, realizing that he'd lost track of things around him for at least a moment. Maybe a few minutes, to judge by the relative silence. The camp was still abuzz, but no longer panicked.

"There are no more vampires," Sayid said. "Not that I could find, at any rate."

"Anybody missing?" Hugh asked.

"No," Sayid said. He hesitated. "Everyone is...accounted for, if not alive."

"How many did we lose?" Hugh asked.

"Seven," Sayid said. Hugh caught his breath, shocked at the number despite knowing that it could have been far worse. "Dr. Crane and 'Weevil' are dead," Sayid continued. "As are Clarice, Lex, Miho, Harry--and Marshal Mars."

"Christ," Hugh commented.

"Chloe is still alive, but..." Sayid shrugged and shook his head. Hugh knew how he felt. Who knew whether she'd live, much less recover. Could she recover? Damned if he knew.

"We need to let the others know," Hugh said. "There might be more of these things wandering around."

Sayid nodded. "We will also want to...send for George or Daisy."

Hugh nodded in return. "Yeah. Yeah, we will."
