Isabel crawled through the undergrowth, away from the flattened ground where her tent had been. Leaves and branches tore at her clothes and hair as she collided with them in the darkness, and dirt and stones ground into her hands and knees as she felt her way around the trees, always moving.
"No no no no no," she muttered. "No no no."
A memory flashed through her mind. Remembered pain. Distantly, it echoed, the dream link not quite severed, but she didn't remember how to stop it.
Battered and exhausted, she reached a clearing and stopped, climbing slowly to her feet and looking up at the star-studded sky. In the lack of artificial light the stars were brilliant and numerous beyond count. The broad sweep of the Milky Way dominated the sky, and she found herself picking out stars and constellations she knew. She did not remember learning them, but she remembered their names and shapes. Perhaps she'd done it growing up, trying to figure out which star was home to her native planet.
But perhaps she'd known, and had just wanted to study Earth astronomy. So many things lost to this void of memory.
