Ami lay trembling and panting beneath Carlos, her body covered in a thin sheen of perspiration. It had taken her a few moments to come to her senses, to register that it wasn't the sheets on the bed that felt that scratchy, but the carpet of the bedroom floor. Ami hadn't a clue when – or how – they'd ended up in that locale, nor did she particularly care. Her hands glided over his back, listening to him pant and draw breath, feeling the rapid beating of his heart against her chest, echoing the frenzied speed of her own.
She knew what had happened and she felt a bit guilty about it. She'd forgotten to shield, forgot to hold her empathic projections in some sense of control, and things had spiraled maddeningly out of control. In a good way, but out of control nonetheless. But it had been so long since she'd had to practice that sort of shielding and restraint – it had been months since Devon had even tried to touch her in a sexual way; they were separated and divorced before they got married, before the engagement ended. And Devon had been so naturally shielded and such a complete psychic dead zone that it hadn't been necessary.
But Carlos … he evidently was neither as shielded or psychically dead as Devon. As wonderful and intense as that last romp had been, she was going to have to be a bit more careful. Still, she couldn't help but smile when he asked her if she was all right, her response sliding out breathlessly, "Perfectly all right. You?"
