Daisy's entire world had contracted to the awful fiery pain in her throat and the terrifying sensation of drowning. She choked and gagged as hot, coppery liquid filled her mouth and throat. Her hands were hot and slippery with the stuff where she clutched at her neck, and it poured over her skin and pooled beneath her as well.
The pain receded quickly. Daisy felt the wound closing beneath her fingers and the sensation of drowning passed. Nausea overwhelmed her, sudden and irresistible. Daisy rolled over onto her side, feeling her blood-matted hair slide across her neck as she moved. She convulsed with the urgency of it, spewing blood over her hand and across the floor.
Daisy's whole body got involved. She vomited or coughed up blood repeatedly, endlessly. Even when there was no more to be had, she knelt in the mess, wracked by spasms that seemed likely to expel her stomach, or at least a lung. It was exhausting and humiliating. And it was far from the first time.
"As you can see," Dr. Sakai said, her voice loud in the shocked silence, "Miss Adair is alive and...perhaps not well, but definitely alive and whole again when she really should be dead. She's a remarkable specimen, a true freak of nature."
Daisy knelt with eyes closed, her head resting on her crossed wrists, panting with the effort involved in clearing her stomach and lungs of blood. She listened to Dr. Sakai and she thought about what had just happened. It would happen again. And again. Whether it was to teach Ami a lesson, or Claire, or just so they could acquire more "data" on her freakish metabolism.
They weren't going to stop. It would keep happening until someone stopped them. So in a way, the worse was already happening. Daisy recalled her thoughts at lunchtime. She didn't think she could wait any longer for rescue. She couldn't endure this any more. The time to do something stupid or desperate was upon her.
Daisy took a deeper, shaky breath and offered a little prayer to whoever might be listening. A prayer that she wasn't going to get Ami, Rose or Claire killed....
