The convulsive retching had finally subsided. Daisy remained on her elbows and knees for a few moments longer, gathering her strength and praying that she wasn't about to make a terrible mistake. It didn't surprise her when hands seized her and pulled her upright. Dr. Sakai argued briefly with Ami before Ami surrendered.
Daisy sat on the edge of the bed where she'd been placed and watched Ami walk over to a young man she didn't recognize. The guard released Ami. She reached out to touch his forehead. Daisy glanced around. Sakai and Mengele watched Ami intently. One guard stood by Ami. The other stood beside Daisy's bed, keeping an eye on her. Daisy looked to Ami again.
Boone scrambled to his feet as if trying to escape Ami's touch. He screamed. Ami echoed him, their voices in eery synch as if one mind were screaming with two voices. Ami fell silent--and fell away from Boone. Everyone's attention was on Ami.
Daisy took a breath and slid off the bed onto her feet. The guard at her side, momentarily distracted by Ami's collapse, turned his attention back to Daisy. He grabbed Daisy's wrist.
Daisy reached across with her free hand to brush his forearm.
