[Sayid] Too late

Date: 2006-09-23 10:06 pm (UTC)
The camp was in chaos, and soul-rending shrieks came from two sources. (Two vampires,) Sayid despaired. He sprinted toward the closer scream, shouting to wake any who could sleep through the din. "We're under attack! Fall back to the fuselage!" He regretted leaving Hugh behind, but more would die the longer they took to get there.

Soon Sayid spotted moonlight on the vampire's pale hair. Its hand was buried in Lex's chest. The formerly young man's scream weakened as his body withered. Chloe, who stood several feet behind Lex, visibly shook herself and leapt forward. Sayid was still too far to stop her. "No, girl! Run!"

She ignored him, hurling her slight frame at the creature instead. To Sayid's surprise, Chloe knocked the vampire off balance for a moment. Lex's flesh-covered skeleton slumped to the sand. Chloe stared at it in wide-eyed horror. With a cruel, delighted smile, the creature dug its claws into her. Her scream replaced Lex's.

Sayid swung wide to come at the monster from behind. Holding the machette with both hands, he swung at the creature's legs. Dark fluid spurted out as it bellowed and crumpled to the ground. Now-elderly Chloe fell as well, free from the vampire's grasp.

Sayid kept his distance as he circled the monster. Although Chloe wimpered, he didn't pay her any attention. The vampire should bleed out from having its legs slashed and hamstrings cut, but Sayid couldn't be sure. The vampires in Hugh's tales could heal from fatal wounds. When it glared and hissed at Sayid, he knew that these vampires could, too.

Without warning the vampire jumped to its feet. It lunged for Sayid with superhuman speed. He barely managed to deflect the creature's hand with the machette as he turned away. More ichor dripped from the gash in its arm as the thing regrouped, growling. Sayid waited for it, whispering the prayer for those whose death was imminent.

It lunged. Sayid slashed, but the vampire pushed past his defense. Talons pricked his skin, then electricity shot through him. The monster shuddered from the pulse of energy. Sayid chopped at the thing's arm, dropped to a crouch, and tore the rusty blade across its torso. Hot, dark liquid flowed freely as it screamed and Sayid scrambled backwards.

He heard Hugh whoop aloud. "Take this, you bloodsucking bastard!" A bolt of light hit the vampire from the side, buckling its knees. "Off with its head!"

Sayid didn't hesistate. Keeping as much distance between it and himself, Sayid buried the machette in the vampire's neck again and again, until the dull blade hacked through bone and tendon. Finally its head tumbled to the sand. Sayid kicked its body down with a curse.
