Who: Isabel, Daniel, Ami
Where: Daniel's office
When: Day 23, afternoon, after Take The Back Road
Invited: Nobody
Status: Incomplete
Daniel had left his door open. Isabel and Ami entered the room and closed the door behind them.
"So," Daniel said. "What happened?"
Isabel swallowed, finding herself suddenly reluctant to talk about what she'd experienced the previous night. But it was important. She rubbed her hands together.
"I thought I'd start with Ethan. He seems to be the one in charge - or the most dangerous. I got into his dream easily. He was... frightened. The dream was full of accusations, towering figures condemning him for failure. I watched until he saw me. He should have taken me for part of his dream, but... he recognised I wasn't." She swallowed again. What had happened was still frightening. "He knew I'd intruded into his dream, and he tried to take control of it, to manipulate his dream to... I don't know what he wanted to do. Maybe he wanted to hurt me, maybe he wanted to find out who I am, but he tried, and it worked. So I fled. I came out of the dream and woke up and I spent the rest of the night awake. I didn't dare try any of the others.
"I guess it wasn't such a good idea to try dreamwalking after all, but I have never - never - encountered somebody who could do that. But then, there are a lot of things on this island I've never encountered before."
She looked over at Ami. "I was sort of hoping Ami might have some thoughts about this. I don't know if you know anything about dreams, Ami, but..." She shook her head. "I don't know."

Date: 2006-11-13 04:56 am (UTC)No matter how much she wanted justice and information from DHARMA, Ami wouldn't have gone into their heads. Dreams were as personal as thoughts, at least in her way of thinking. And she wouldn't want anyone uninvited inside of her head. Evidently though, Daniel didn't see it that way, because he clearly sanctioned the action.
Maybe in this case the ends did justify the means, but Ami didn't like it.
(I don't go snooping about in people's dreams anymore than I do their heads,) Ami thought, but managed to keep it just that – a thought. An annoyed thought that she managed to clamp down and shield from Scott and Megabyte, because she didn't want to have to explain.
Not that it made much difference. It was over, it was done with and there was nothing Ami could do about it now. And, the failed experiment had not yielded any fruit.
"He could be a lucid dreamer," Ami offered.
"You mean people who control their dreams?" Daniel asked. At her nod, he continued, "Then why would he have been so . . . demoralized initially? Ethan's not psychic, at least I'm assuming he's not psychic, therefore unless he knew Isabel was coming . . ."
Ami shook her head and shuddered at the thought of Ethan being psychic. "Lucid dreaming doesn't work that way all the time. It takes skill and concentration and practice to become a lucid dreamer, and it's not like normal dreaming. Most of the time a regular dream shifts into a lucid dream when . . . the dreamer realizes that he's dreaming."
"And most people wake up when that happens."
"That's why it takes practice and effort to be a lucid dreamer," Ami nodded. "There's a good chance that Ethan is one, but he needed a trigger. The trigger is something that's out of place or unusual, even in a dream. Isabel could have been the trigger that made his subconscious think 'Something's not right here,' and allowed him to take control."

Date: 2006-11-13 11:08 am (UTC)A lucid dreamer... Isabel thought, considering. She'd read about lucid dreaming years ago, when she had gone through a phase of trying to understand her dreamwalking. she hadn't found anything particularly useful to her situation, but she had become familiar with the basic concepts behind it, and quite skeptical as to its frequency. No wonder she hadn't thought of that idea herself.
"That's a possibility," Isabel said. "I don't think I've ever dreamwalked a lucid dreamer before. But he was not able to prevent me from leaving. Still... I don't think I'll try it again."
