Who: Marshal Edward Mars Sayid & Hugh
Where: Camp Crash
When: Day 20, Late Night, during Raelle's Arrival
Invited: Anyone at Camp Crash (i.e., NPCs) [CLOSED]
Status: Complete
Edward Mars stood near the tide line, his back to the signal fire to preserve his night vision. It was fairly chilly on the beach at this time of night. Fortunately, his suit jacket--stained beyond repair though it was--kept him warm enough. The surf glittered in the moonlight and the roar as it crashed against the shore was almost soothing.
Mars shook himself, annoyed by having succumbed to the hypnotic effect. He was on duty. Guard duty, to be specific. Not that he cared to spend a lot of time thinking about what he was guarding these...civilians from. Ash Williams' preposterous tales of zombies had been bad enough. Then the old fart had started spinning tales of vampires. After that it became a free-for-all.
He'd lost track of all the bullshit he'd been subjected to. Grim reapers, ghosts, souls, magic, witches, medicine men, aliens, psychics, and god knows what else. Mars snorted in disdain. And these weak-minded fools were ready to swallow all that bilge after a few scares by noises in the jungle--but refused to listen to his warnings about the actual, honest-to-god killer in their midst.
On the other hand, they weren't entirely dim. The jungle-dwelling Others were real enough. That poor kid, what was his name--Eric?--had proved that, right enough. Not to mention Amanda's attempted murder of George. Crazy George might well be, but she didn't deserve that. No, this group needed someone level headed to watch over them. And since the self-apponted leaders had decamped for greener pastures, that left Marshal Mars, not that--
Mars' thoughts were interrupted by a high whine that rapidly grew into a scream. He turned to see a--something--arrow down out of the sky. For an instant he thought fighter jet. But it had no wings and the shape was all wrong. It screeched overhead, tracing a curving path that took it briefly out over the water then back over the beach.
Then it was plowing nose first into the sand a hundred yards down the beach, flipping end over end a couple of times and coming to rest facing backwards but right side up, assuming that what looked like a cockpit was in fact the cockpit.
Mars stared for a moment, then took off a run. He hoped the pilot was still alive. But even if not, there might be a working radio....

[Sayid] Fearless Monster Killers
Date: 2006-09-21 11:10 pm (UTC)"Could be," Hugh agreed somberly. He started limping back toward camp holding the alien weapon ready. "C'mon, son. I'm not getting any younger."
Sayid quickly caught up. "This vampire merely touched Mars," he warned in a near whisper. "It did not bite, like those in your stories. If there are more, do not let them get close." Hugh's wan expression said that he'd stated the obvious.
OOC: Ugh. That's all I got for now. If I come up with more I'll continue this.
[Hugh] Watching Helplessly
Date: 2006-09-22 10:11 pm (UTC)Hugh broke into a slow run, moving as fast as he was able. Not fast enough. Sayid glanced at him uncertainly, then took off at a sprint without waiting for Hugh to wave him onward. Hugh soldiered on as best he could.
The screaming seemed to have broken whatever spell the vampire had cast over the camp. People were popping up and out of shelter all over the camp. Shouting and chaos followed.
Hugh could hear Sayid's voice over the din, pitched to carry through the chaos. That told him as clearly as anything could that Sayid was--or had been--a soldier, and he'd seen action. Another scream. Hugh couldn't tell if it was a man or a woman.
He pushed himself a little faster.
[Sayid] Too late
Date: 2006-09-23 10:06 pm (UTC)Soon Sayid spotted moonlight on the vampire's pale hair. Its hand was buried in Lex's chest. The formerly young man's scream weakened as his body withered. Chloe, who stood several feet behind Lex, visibly shook herself and leapt forward. Sayid was still too far to stop her. "No, girl! Run!"
She ignored him, hurling her slight frame at the creature instead. To Sayid's surprise, Chloe knocked the vampire off balance for a moment. Lex's flesh-covered skeleton slumped to the sand. Chloe stared at it in wide-eyed horror. With a cruel, delighted smile, the creature dug its claws into her. Her scream replaced Lex's.
Sayid swung wide to come at the monster from behind. Holding the machette with both hands, he swung at the creature's legs. Dark fluid spurted out as it bellowed and crumpled to the ground. Now-elderly Chloe fell as well, free from the vampire's grasp.
Sayid kept his distance as he circled the monster. Although Chloe wimpered, he didn't pay her any attention. The vampire should bleed out from having its legs slashed and hamstrings cut, but Sayid couldn't be sure. The vampires in Hugh's tales could heal from fatal wounds. When it glared and hissed at Sayid, he knew that these vampires could, too.
Without warning the vampire jumped to its feet. It lunged for Sayid with superhuman speed. He barely managed to deflect the creature's hand with the machette as he turned away. More ichor dripped from the gash in its arm as the thing regrouped, growling. Sayid waited for it, whispering the prayer for those whose death was imminent.
It lunged. Sayid slashed, but the vampire pushed past his defense. Talons pricked his skin, then electricity shot through him. The monster shuddered from the pulse of energy. Sayid chopped at the thing's arm, dropped to a crouch, and tore the rusty blade across its torso. Hot, dark liquid flowed freely as it screamed and Sayid scrambled backwards.
He heard Hugh whoop aloud. "Take this, you bloodsucking bastard!" A bolt of light hit the vampire from the side, buckling its knees. "Off with its head!"
Sayid didn't hesistate. Keeping as much distance between it and himself, Sayid buried the machette in the vampire's neck again and again, until the dull blade hacked through bone and tendon. Finally its head tumbled to the sand. Sayid kicked its body down with a curse.
[Hugh] Much, Much Too Late
Date: 2006-09-23 11:22 pm (UTC)The second vampire--(How of these God-cursed things were there?)--was draining the life from Miho. This despite the fact that she'd run her katana clean through it's torso. It leaned over, keeping it's hand pressed to her chest as her knees buckling and she sank to the sank.
Hugh wasn't terribly surprised to realize that it wasn't Miho screaming. Her face was a mask of suffering, but she remained silent--as always. It was Sun and Carrie, screaming and holding one another, that he'd heard.
The vampire released it's hold on the dessicated husk that had been a lovely young woman moments earlier and turned on Sun and Carrie--just as Jin appeared from nowhere to impale it with a...spear? A fishing spear.
Jin pushed the vampire off its feet and leaned his weight on it, to hold it down, shouting over his shoulder. A moment later Tommy appeared with a second spear and after only a moment's pause to stare, he drove his spear into the vampire.
The spears seemed to do little to harm the vampire, but they kept it pinned. Hugh ran over and shot it with the blaster. It took a couple of shots before the vampire went limp. Hugh turned to shout for Sayid, but Sayid was already running to join them.
It took only a few moments for Sayid to decapitate this one. (Practice makes perfect,) Hugh thought.
"Is that all of them?" Hugh asked, even as he looked around for more. He didn't spot any. Plenty of screaming, shouting, hysterical people--but no more vampires.
Hugh sat down abruptly, his legs giving out. He rested, feeling his breathing and heartbeat settle down much too slowly for his taste--another reminder of his age. In his prime, he'd have been ready for more much more quickly.
Sayid appeared in front of him like magic. Hugh frowned, realizing that he'd lost track of things around him for at least a moment. Maybe a few minutes, to judge by the relative silence. The camp was still abuzz, but no longer panicked.
"There are no more vampires," Sayid said. "Not that I could find, at any rate."
"Anybody missing?" Hugh asked.
"No," Sayid said. He hesitated. "Everyone is...accounted for, if not alive."
"How many did we lose?" Hugh asked.
"Seven," Sayid said. Hugh caught his breath, shocked at the number despite knowing that it could have been far worse. "Dr. Crane and 'Weevil' are dead," Sayid continued. "As are Clarice, Lex, Miho, Harry--and Marshal Mars."
"Christ," Hugh commented.
"Chloe is still alive, but..." Sayid shrugged and shook his head. Hugh knew how he felt. Who knew whether she'd live, much less recover. Could she recover? Damned if he knew.
"We need to let the others know," Hugh said. "There might be more of these things wandering around."
Sayid nodded. "We will also want to...send for George or Daisy."
Hugh nodded in return. "Yeah. Yeah, we will."
[Doctor] Much, Much Too Late (open)
Date: 2006-09-24 02:02 am (UTC)The Doctor, Molly, Dean, Sam and Chris broke through the jungle and onto the beach.
The Doctor noticed their arrival had several people jumping back and away, or, in Tommy's case, pointing something sharp and pointy at them.
He also noticed the screams had ceased and there was a dead Wraith pinned to the ground ten feet to the left.
"How many Wraith, how many wounded?" He asked no one in particular.
[Hugh] Much, Much Too Late
Date: 2006-09-24 02:11 am (UTC)He stretched a little, feeling his joints creak. "Seven dead and one...wounded."
Hugh eyed the Doctor and his companions, all armed for bear. "We wanted to warn you about these things, but I guess you already know about 'em. How'd it go on your end?"
[Doctor] Bad timing for the Time Lord
Date: 2006-09-24 02:55 am (UTC)He handed the spare stunner Jack had given him to Sayid. "They came through a wormhole. And they're called Wraith, yes. Energy vampires. They... I guess you know what they do. When one Stinger was spotted headed for the beach we headed here as soon as we could. Too late, it seems."
"Oh no." Molly's voice, cried out to the right. "No, please."
She small woman was clutching a dessicated body, and was starting to sob. "You're supposed to see a unicorn. See the good things that balance the bad. Not like this... please, not like this..."
But pleading wouldn't turn back time, and couldn't stop evil things from happening.
The Doctor was torn between trying to offer empty comfort and looking away.
[Hugh] Wormhole, eh?
Date: 2006-09-24 05:39 am (UTC)When the Time Lord nodded abruptly (no doubt distracted by Molly's grief, not that there was anything either of them could do for her), Hugh nodded as well. "That's all right then, I guess. So no deaths back there?"
"No," the Doctor said. "No deaths."
"Good," Hugh said, feeling abruptly very tired. "That's good."
He walked over and knelt beside Molly, wincing at the twinges in his knees when he did. "C'mon Molly, darlin'," Hugh said, "there's nothing you can do for her now. When George or Daisy--then you can say goodbye."
[Molly] Hating death and life
Date: 2006-09-24 02:59 pm (UTC)Mortals came and went. It was the way of things. Yet she still had not learned to distance herself from it. She still felt the pain of every lost friend. And when they were denied a full life it was always worse.
"I was gonna show her such beauty. Wonderful things so that the new monsters in her world would be evened out by the new joy. I promised her. I promised. I hate this. I hate this island. I hate this world.I hate how unfair everything always is and no matter what we do... we can't really make it any better in the end."
Molly sniffled and tried to compose herself. Her eyes were all red and puffy and her nose was dripping. She didn't care, really. But making a specticle served Clarice no good.
Hugh was right. Maybe Daisy or George could at least let her say goodbye. She so rarely got that chance.
However, depression had started to nibble at the edges of her newly found confidence. A general anger at the universe twisting in her gut.
